The design and construction of a timber frame or SIP home is a challenging and rewarding experience for me. At DW Design I work hard to ensure your design meets your needs, your expectations, and your budget. I believe this to be one the most valuable and important services I can offer.
Design development is the first phase of the complete design process. As I work through the process of design development with you, I will generate a set of custom preliminary plans. Preliminary design documents include floor plans, exterior elevations, and cross sections showing possible timber placement, but do not include the format or details necessary to use as construction drawings.
The purpose of the preliminary design drawings is to provide sufficient design and cost estimate information for you to make a decision about moving to the second phase of the final construction documents.
In addition to generating a custom set of drawings, there are other important benefits to the preliminary design program. This process gives me an opportunity to develop a working relationship with the client. It also provides a reality checkpoint for balancing the dreams developed on paper with the realities of your budget requirements. Because design has such a major impact on cost, I want this checkpoint to occur well before you have invested in the final design detailing. Many design alterations can be incorporated into final construction drawings, which could have a significant effect on overall costs.
Many choices must be made to create your dream home while keeping within a budget. Using a hybrid home approach for example, allows portions of the house to be timber framed and the remainder to be built using conventional framing or energy-efficient structural insulated panels (SIPS). Due to cost considerations, the majority of homes I design are hybrids which have the core as a timber frame structure and insulated panel roof enclosure. Because of my emphasis on client involvement through the custom design process, construction costs can vary dramatically
Final construction drawings include all preliminary engineering and detail work necessary for the construction using cadwork ® software. With this software I am able to create computer generated 3-D models of the timber frame. From this 3-D model the software then enables me to give you a complete set of 2-D frame and architectural drawings which will be used by you or your contractor to create the home of your dreams. The end result is an accurately cut frame and complete lists of materials.
